Gowe infusion, also known as Cyperus Rotondus, is a unique fragrance from West Africa, particularly Senegal. A veritable nugget of nature, Gowe comes from the same family as Papyrus. Hyraceum (Procavia Capensis Excret), better known as the ‘African Stone’, is an extremely rare infusion extracted from the fossilised excrement of the Cape Daman. These small mammals, which live in communities in southern Africa, have the habit of always excreting in the same place. What a smell! So why make an infusion of it? To satisfy the curious, but not only. In perfumery, fetid and animal smells play an essential role in perfume design. Quite simply because they are great fixers, and therefore enhance the other fragrances in your perfumes.

With the exception of ambergris, these materials have virtually disappeared in nature, primarily for the sake of animal welfare, and that's all to the good! Not least because to obtain them, animals had to be excited, tortured or even killed. But the reason why Le Sourceur offers Hyraceum is precisely because it does not disturb the animal in its natural habitat. We simply collect the excrement and infuse it for 6 to 9 months in 95% perfume alcohol.

Namibian Myrrh (Commiphora Wildii) is a raw material cultivated by the Himba tribe in the Kunene region, in the northwest of Namibia. It is harvested in the form of resin that oozes directly from the tree and collected by hand by the women of the community. Namibian Myrrh Essential Oil is then obtained by steam distillation of this resin to release a turpentine-like fragrance, with warm, balsamic notes, sometimes aniseed, sometimes tenacious, reminiscent of oak barrels.

Our Upcycling Sandalwood Absolute (Santalum Album) is a precious and unique extract, the result of years of experimentation to obtain something new from something old. In the beginning, nothing too trivial: Sandalwood Album grown in Australia is transformed into essential oil by hydrodistillation. At the end of the process, the dry wood is usually used as fuel. But not this time. As part of our drive to recycle waste, and because it seems obvious that the material has some deep-seated secrets, we wanted to dig a little deeper.

So we collected this dry waste and proposed this somewhat crazy project to our extraction partners. We finally succeeded thanks to a sophisticated method that uses natural citroflex as a solvent and captures the last olfactory notes of white sandalwood, offering a unique, original, and particularly aromatic absolute. Upcycling not only reduces waste, it gives materials a second life, while respecting our commitment to the environment and sustainability.

Sandalwood Absolute Upcycling differs from Sandalwood Album essential oil in its more woody, toasty notes, deliciously reminiscent of burnt caramel. A pure olfactory gem that we recommend with our eyes closed.
