The San Rafael Waterfall is a waterfall in Ecuador, or more precisely was, because the highest waterfall in the country did disappear recently, on February 2nd 2020. We wanted to highlight the drying up of this resource, synonymous with life for local animal, plant and human populations, a very worrying drying up
The Cayambe-Coca park was thus deprived of its 150-metre-high jewel, the symbol of an entire region. This section of the Coca River flows into a canyon formed by the active stratovolcano Reventador and forms part of the Sumako National Park, recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 2000 and a symbol of ecotourism.
A hydroelectric dam built in 2016 is believed to be the cause of this sudden change. A disappearance directly observed by the NASA observatory. A huge hole has formed a few metres upstream from the waterfall and diverts the water to a completely different path. It is not known what will happen to this water diversion, as the new path is much more fragile than the previous one, so changes to the local landscape are expected and the river’s course may change again soon.
Ecuador’s highest waterfall, San Rafael, is no more: in 2020, a combination of geological phenomena finally took its millennial flow in the Cayambe Coca reserve. So, to honour its past majesty, we wanted to pay tribute to it through a fragrance bursting with life.
We therefore turned to the fruit of the Palo Santo, a perfectly renewable resource from a tree threatened with extinction due to the excessive use of its wood for ritual fumigation. Sacred in this region and throughout South America, the Palo Santo embodies the spirit of the Amazon, a fertile and massive jungle where man enters into full communion with the living. Thus, despite the gradual fading of San Rafael, this waterfall will forever remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
The essence of the Palo Santo fruit carries with it the inordinate richness of a perfume created by nature itself, and the multiple olfactory nuances that our San Rafael Perfume Mist attributes to it are as many scintillating and bewitching facets. A fruity, floral, green, balmy, smoky and woody gust all at once! Solar Ylang oil and Orange Blossom alcoholate join together in a smooth wave that counterbalances the finely pyrogenic accents of Fir Balsam.
The whole is firmly consolidated in the Copal resin, evoking both citrus zest and pine needles. Finally, little by little, the initial complexity turns into an enveloping and reassuring cocoon, imbuing the air with an unalterable woody caress.
Thanks to the joint action of Palo Santo and Copal Santo, Ylang Ylang and Fir Balsam, our San Rafael Home Fragrance promotes concentration while combating your daily fears and anxieties. A must-have spray to help build your confidence or give you the courage to make important decisions.
